Strong kanban functionality will allow companies to pull products through their supply chain, thus leaning the supply chain, minimizing work in process, maximizing responsiveness, and avoiding stock piling of finished goods. Regardless of how many sites you manufacture at, your enterprise application should provide for operations at multiple sites . Because, as you begin to think in terms of your supply chain, its encompassing vendors, distributors, and

Learning Management Suite (LMS)

These are tools for managing, creating, scheduling training or learning in your organization. The terminology varies from vendor to vendor. Learning management systems (LMS) typically help to manage both classroom and on-line learning. They do not normally include content creation or management tools but may in some cases. Some LMSs may manage just classroom or just e-learning rather than both. Some LMSs may also include content authoring and managment and virtual classrooms. Learning content management systems (LCMS) emphasize the management of content for courses/training/learning. In most cases, they include content authoring tools. In some cases, they may also include some of the features of LMSs. Content authoring tools are often provided as part of an LCMS. They may also be stand-alone products. Virtual classrooms (web conferencing tools) normally are separate third party offerings but may be included as part of a suite of tools. Suites of tools include features of at least two or more of the above categories. While some companies offer just LMS or LCMS systems others offer suites of products, which provide all or most of the features of the other tools. Suites combine several capabilities of learning management--usually two or more of the following: learning management, classroom training management, e-learning management, custom content creation, learning content management, learning object repositories, or virtual classrooms.

Are PLM and Global Sourcing Related? Duh, And How! (Part II)

Part I of this blog post analyzed the white paper entitled "Manufacturing Outsourcing: Seven Common Pitfalls to Avoid" , authored by Symphony Consulting and Arena Solutions. It also established an intrinsic connection with product lifecycle management (PLM) software technology as a global sourcing collaboration enabler. Indeed, several macroeconomic trends seem to be helping the PLM market

How is the purchasing order policy being managed: through the traditional ABC categories, or by a more modern approach? At what point in the supply chain does the ownership of the finished goods inventory transfer? Are all transportation costs such as freight, taxes, and duties included, or will they be invoiced separately? Last but not least, what is the scope of the CM’s warranty, and for what Read More

Production Management Research

Primarily due to rapid development of technology in the past thirty years, the market structure throughout the world has changed considerably. Local markets have become accessible to foreign manufacturers, who are able to perform well in their newly established territories in part due to their superior application of technology. In this light, most companies, including small and medium size, have embedded globalization in their expansion strategies, consistently seeking for new markets abroad. Consequently, local manufacturing companies are facing global competition, forcing them to adopt new concepts with respect to people, process and technologies. This document describes these approaches to production planning in detail as well outlines a software solution. The software solution (Production/3) combines both pull and push techniques and enables small to medium size organizations to fully automate their production system while retaining their investment in their legacy enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

kanban training  System Kanban: In a Kanban system, production is triggered by demand. When a part is removed from final inventory point, the last workstation in the line is given authorization to replace the part. This workstation in return sends an authorization signal to the upstream workstation to replace the part it just consumed. This process continues upstream, replenishing the downstream void by requesting material from the antecedent workstation. To control production, the operator requires both input raw Read More

Pull vs Push: a Discussion of Lean, JIT, Flow, and Traditional MRP Part Two: Challenges and User Recommendations

While lean/flow leverages practices to stay ahead of actual demand, traditional approaches better coordinate secondary, back-office systems like accounting and HR. Moreover, flow should be a company-wide strategy that impacts more than manufacturing.

kanban training  Flow Manager product handles kanban replenishment and demand smoothing (but not line design and operation method sheets (OMS), because these features do not bring much benefit to ETO manufacturers). Their customers often specify product families that include products requiring one or two unique and expensive components in addition to common parts that could benefit from flow methods of smoothing spikes in demand. Also, only certain industries like high-tech, aviation and defense (A&D), and consumer Read More
